April YAPI News and Notes
YAPI doesn’t get much better than the wonderful night we had in April which included quite a variety in age, musical genres and instrumentation! Demitri Hendry started off the evening with some piano solos including an original variation on a classic melody. Very creative. He will be writing and performing his own piano music before long! We welcomed Abe and Gabi Callow for the first time. Abe, age 6, played an impressive violin solo and Gabi played a couple cello solos with wonderful tone and intonation. It was the first time we have had a cellist at YAPI and it was a wonderful addition to the YAPI lineup. We welcome Abe and Gabi back any time.
Kat and Bela performed at YAPI for the first time in March and returned this month, bringing another friend, Rachel. This trio of 9 year olds sang a song they wrote together. The trio had recently won 3rd place in a talent contest singing their original song a cappella! Rachel and Bela also sang as a duo a cappella. We are very happy to have this group of young singers join the list of YAPI regulars!
Speaking of YAPI regulars, it is simply thrilling to hear the teens who have been participating in YAPI. Natalie Shanklin wowed the audience with her versions of several cover songs as she effortlessly accompanied herself on piano. She also sang one of her originals upon request from one of the adult audience members. Abby Wetzel also sings very well and effortlessly accompanies herself on guitar. She is writing up a storm! Abby’s original songs are impressive: heartfelt and very well-constructed. She is definitely an up and coming singer/songwriter in the area. Lauren Wolff had recently won a talent context at school and we were pleased to hear her perform those songs and more. Lauren has really grown as a performer in the short time we have been hearing her at YAPI. Natalie sang with Lauren and with Abby. It is so fun to see YAPI participants team up and perform.
Our last performer of the evening was Alex Aston. Alex almost exclusively plays his original music. His lyrics have depth and his guitar grooves and licks are a style all his own. Alex announced that he will not be performing many more times at YAPI because he is moving on, but I have enjoyed watching Alex grow as a performer and a writer. Thanks to Alex for sharing his talent with us over the past 7 years or so, and we wish you the best! Alex definitely has a future as a performing musician.
Congratulations to YAPI performer Dillon Havens who placed 3rd in the Youth Talent Contest at the Old Settlers Festival!
Thank you to Natalie Shanklin for bringing her keyboard and generously allowing other YAPI performers to use it as well. A great big “thank you” to DuAnne Redus, owner of Maui Wowi, for staying open the extra hour and a half on YAPI nights! Please come and enjoy the YAPI entertainment along with a coffee, smoothie or snack. It’s nice to have an appropriate venue for YAPI so your support of Maui Wowi is greatly appreciated! Thanks also to all those special people who forward this on and help get the word out about YAPI!
If there are any young writers out there who would like to be the YAPI reporter and write an article for the school paper, Wimberley paper, or write the YAPI News & Notes for the website or the YAPI Facebook page, please speak up! Also, a young YAPI photographer would be welcomed! Just contact Brenda Freed if you are interested at BFreed1@earthlink.net with YAPI in the subject.

Everyone is invited back to the next YAPI, the first Thursday in May, May 4th . It will be your last opportunity to participate in YAPI until August because YAPI does not happen in June or July. So, please come out May 4th and let’s close this YAPI season with a great show for the YAPI audience! Thanks for your support of this community event that serves youth!
