February YAPI News and Notes
YAPI celebrated 10 years of existence this month and what a 10 year birthday party it was! We celebrated the birthdays of 2 performers as well: Teresa Brod turned 7 and Natalie Shanklin turned 17. Natalie celebrated her 12th birthday at YAPI and many of her friends who attended that YAPI 5 years ago came to celebrate with her this time. Maui Wowi was packed wall to wall with performers and listeners. It could not have been a better 10 year birthday party for YAPI!
Performing at YAPI for the first time this month were Teresa Brod (birthday girl), Tori Robinson, Sage Kyle, Anna Beliveau, Maiya Keutz (from Blanco) and Kenna Thompson (from Johnson City).
It’s always great to hear the young violin players. Teresa and Tori were amazing; so poised. It’s always fun to hear young songwriters, too. At the early age of 9, Sage is already writing and now performing. We look forward to more from her in the future. It can be intimidating to perform for a large crowd but all the new YAPI performers did so well, and for some of them it was their first public performance ever! Maiya Keutz and Kenna Thompson sang and Anna Beliveau played piano all extremely well to the packed YAPI house. They are all sure to become great performers, especially if they continue to take advantage of this monthly opportunity to perform at YAPI!
It was great to hear violin maestro Arianna again. She started performing at YAPI at age 4 or 5, but she had not performed at YAPI in a while and she continues to grow as a violinist. Rory Hancock came back to perform. He has grown so much as a performer since his first YAPI about 6 years ago. He is now quite the singer and picker and has performed on main stage at the Kerrville Folk Festival with his father, Butch Hancock. As well as each performing solo, Natalie Shanklin and Abby Wetzel performed as “That Makes Two”. They are writing some great songs; Abby writes the lyrics and Natalie writes the music. What a team! Natalie also sang with Lauren Wolff and the two of them have worked out some beautiful harmonies. Lauren also performed solo and she displays such confidence when she performs with her strong voice and guitar playing.
Thanks to the great February YAPI audience turnout! Thanks for your support of this community event that has been serving youth since 2003!
Thanks to Rory and Natalie’s roadies for helping with the sound equipment. A great big “thank you” to DuAnne Redus, owner of Maui Wowi, for being so supportive and for providing an appropriate venue supporting YAPI since 2006! It was great to see her there for YAPI’s 10 year birthday party!
Thanks also to all those special people who help get the word out about YAPI!
